A face oil contains plant lipids and fatty acids that reinforce the skin's outer barrier, seal in the products underneath, and provide antioxidants that support healthy cell turnover. Applied as the last step at night (or under sunscreen in the morning), it locks your serum and moisturizer in place, so they keep working longer. Over time, that translates to a stronger barrier, a calmer complexion, and a natural-looking glow.
Heavy or comedogenic oils can trap sweat and dead skin, feeding breakouts. Lightweight, non-comedogenic oils like jojoba, squalane, and grapeseed do the opposite: they signal to the skin that it doesn't need to overproduce sebum, which can calm oiliness over time. Look for fast-absorbing plant oils, and start with a drop or two.
After cleansing, toning, and any water-based serums, a face oil goes on before your heaviest moisturizer or as the seal on top. In the morning, it can slot under sunscreen if your skin needs the extra hydration; at night, it's the last step that locks the routine in.
Three to five drops is usually enough for the whole face and neck. Warm them between your palms first, then press them into skin rather than rubbing, so the oil absorbs instead of sitting on the surface. If you're still seeing shine or a greasy film after a few minutes, you've used too much; dial back next time.
A serum is water-based and delivers concentrated actives (vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, peptides) deep into the skin to target a specific concern. A face oil is oil-based and works on the surface, sealing in the serum, reinforcing the barrier, and adding lipids the skin needs. Most routines use both: serum first for the actives, oil last to lock them in.
Most are. A few aren't. Oils rich in citrus essential oils (like bergamot or lemon) can be phototoxic and cause pigmentation with sun exposure, so those are best kept for night. Retinol-based or exfoliating oils also belong in the evening routine. For daytime, stick to non-photoactive plant oils like rosehip, argan, or plum, and always layer sunscreen over the top.
