The Detox Market:
Your new clean beauty recycling hub

The planet thanks you

At The Detox Market, we believe everyone deserves a beautiful future—that’s why we’ve partnered with TerraCycle, an innovative company that recycles the hard-to-recycle.

Each year, the beauty industry produces an enormous amount of plastic, most of which leaves a not-so-pretty legacy (translation: it ends up being thrown away). By giving beauty packaging—shampoo caps, hair gel tubes, skincare and lotion dispensers, foundation containers, and more—a second life, we divert millions of pounds of waste from our landfills and oceans. Consider the data: Plastic takes around 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill, and estimates project there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050 (by weight).

Recycling and sustainability are more relevant than ever. To toss your empties in an eco-friendly way, bring them to any of our retail stores—or check out our helpful recycling guide if you can’t make it in. For every full-size product you recycle with us, we reward you with 10 Detox Points! (Please note: Dropoffs are limited to 10 per customer per visit.)

FAQs

What does TerraCycle do with my empties?

Keeps them out of landfills and incinerators, most importantly. TerraCycle recycles over 97% of the waste it collects, and reuses or upcycles the rest.

Why can’t I just throw all my empties into the recycling bin and hope for the best?

Because many beauty and personal care products are made up of a number of different materials (think plastic, recycled plastic, glass, metal springs). Separating them is difficult and costly, and it all comes down to how your local facility does things. Just because something has a recycling symbol on it doesn’t guarantee it actually gets recycled!

What kinds of packaging or materials can I bring to The Detox Market for recycling?

If your plastics have #1 or #2 on them, check for local recycling solutions in your area—if none exist, we’ve got your back. Here’s a list of acceptable materials you can drop off:

  • Skincare packaging: containers, lip balm tubes and caps, soap dispensers and tubes, body wash caps, lotion dispensers and caps
  • Hair care packaging: containers, shampoo caps, conditioner caps, hair gel tubes and caps, hair spray triggers, hair paste caps
  • Cosmetic packaging: lipstick cases, lip gloss tubes, mascara tubes, eye shadow cases, bronzer cases, foundation packaging, powder cases, eyeliner cases, eyeliner pencils, eyeshadow tubes, concealer tubes, concealer sticks, lip liner pencils

There’s no simple solution to the plastic problem, especially considering its presence in almost every aspect of the beauty industry. Change will require consistent, collective, and concerted effort from companies of all sizes doing what they can to minimize their impact. So reduce, reuse, and when in doubt—TerraCycle!
